Making History Rock – online and in the classroom!

All of our workshops are interactive and delivered live online to students all across North America and Great Britain.  We also still offer in-person workshops in Saskatoon, SK and surrounding area.

Workshops are customisable to suit diverse curriculum, time slots and ages.  We aim to make lessons as relevant to the audience as possible for maximum engagement.  The WW1 and Genocide, Assimilation & Holocaust workshops can be customised for Canada, the UK and U.S. audiences, as appropriate.  Book your workshop now.

World War One

Content:
This program focusses strongly on the vital part played by Canada during the Great War, but if you're looking to highlight the role of Britain or the United States, we can customise the workshop to your location & needs, just let us know when booking.

Having returned from the battlefields of France and Belgium, our WW1 soldier brings with him artifacts and personal possessions which the students will have an opportunity to handle and talk about. Our brave soldier explains the causes that led to the First World War and takes the audience through the first gas attack at Ypres and the battles of the Somme, Passchendaele and Vimy Ridge.

In addition to the battles and trench warfare, we explore the changing role of women both on the home front and overseas. From a Canadian perspective we highlight the skill and bravery of the First Nations sniper, Francis Pegahmagabow and discover what role Canada’s First Nations and the Metis played during WW1 and the consequences they suffered.

The format of the session comprises of a dramatic presentation from the soldier and concludes with a hands-on experience with artefacts, including an original Lee Enfield rifle from the war.

As a veteran soldier himself, Kevin is perfectly experienced to portray the events and enhance student’s understanding of what life was like for the ordinary soldier. During the Fall, this presentation can be adapted with special focus on Remembrance.

Genocide, Assimilation & the Holocaust

Then through the eyes of Sturmbannfuhrer Lange, who makes no excuse for the actions of the SS during WW2, students will come to understand how the Germans were able to commit genocide and facilitate the murder of over 6 million Jews on an industrial scale.

We also explore the topic of modern genocide by linking in Bosnia and Rwanda and discover Canada’s role as a peace keeping force.

This is a serious social studies topic presented in such a way that will leave students deeply moved, but it can also be sensitively adapted to suit elementary audiences.

Life in the Medieval Times

Content:
What was it like for the people of England in 1066 when their country was conquered by the Normans? A new language, French, was spoken by their overlords. Castles were built as well as cathedrals which brought in a new form of Christianity. New laws and punishments were enforced, and freedom lost as the Feudal system was imposed. This new system would shape the future of society for hundreds of years to come. We will show how, with the signing of the Magna Carta, the laws laid down in those days would become the foundation for many of the judicial systems of the world today.

Through the eyes of an English longbowman, our presentation looks at housing, farming, entertainment and the day to day living in medieval times. We also cross over into France to explore the hundred years war and follow the effects of the Black Death in Europe.
The longbowman arrives with a full array of weapons, equipment and artifacts to demonstrate and for students to handle. Using a wax model head, he demonstrates medieval surgery with the extraction of an arrowhead (recreating the operation carried out on the young Henry V after the battle of Shrewsbury).
To finish the day, if time and space permits, we can give an astounding demonstration of the power and accuracy of the medieval longbow.

Suitability:
Suitable for grades 6-12 as every presentation can be individually tailored to suit the age, ability and needs of the audience.

Themes:
Medieval Europe, feudal system, society, religion, war, medicine, Magna Carta, law & order, the Black Death.

Renaissance; the age of enlightenment

Content:
Through the eyes of a renaissance/15C surgeon, we take students on a journey through Europe following the advances in medicine, art, religion as well as in politics. From the city states of Italy to the changing religious climate of northern Europe we will demonstrate how the spread of the Protestant faith and the countering effect of the Catholic Church helped to shape Europe and later the Americas and Canada, when people fled religious persecution to settle there.

We’ll also discover how medicine developed during this time through the surgeons Vesalius and Pare. Students will learn about Renaissance man, Leonardo Da Vinci, exploring his work of discovery on the human body that remained hidden for more than three hundred years, as well as his work as artist and inventor.

Suitability:
Suitable for grades 6-12 as every presentation can be individually tailored to suit the age, ability and needs of the audience.

Ancient Rome

Content:
The Roman empire is a fascinating topic; there’s so much content to explore and so many questions to ask. For example, how did the Romans make one of the greatest empires the world has ever known?

Through the eyes of a Centurion, we’ll delve into the life of a Roman soldier to uncover how he marched, fought and lived. You’ll see the different kinds of armour he wore, learn about his weapons and discover what he kept in his kit bag and why. Students will learn about Rome itself, one of the greatest cities of the ancient world, and the first to have a million inhabitants. We’ll take a look at the Colosseum, what entertainment was to be found there? Who were Verus and Priscus and what was their story? We’ll also explore what it was like to be a slave, their rights and living conditions.

If teachers wish, we can recommend an art project in advance of the workshop, whereby children make and paint their own Roman shields. On the day of the workshop, children can be split into groups and drilled with their shields in Latin. This can be done as a competition between groups and has proved to be not only a great success but also a tremendous amount of fun.
